Located in the southern part of Darjeeling hills, this is among the largest wildlife sanctuaries of this region. Spread across 159 sq km of land, the sanctuary is home to numerous animal and bird species making it a perfect place to explore the rich wildlife of North Bengal. Royal Bengal Tiger, Himalayan Wolf, barking Deer, Sambar and Rhesus Monkey along with more than 300 species of birds are found in this region. One of the most popular hotspots of this region, Bengal Safari is located at a distance of 8km from the city and popular tourist destination. Spread across more than 700 acres of land, the park is home to all major animal and bird species which can be witnessed with the help of jeep safari and elephant safari. There are numerous other activities that can be enjoyed apart from exploring the wildlife making it a perfect spot to visit at the weekends.
Situated on the virgin forest area of Kalimpong adjacent to the lava and Gorubathan, Neora Valley National Park is a rich biodiversity. Placed on the Sikkim and Bhutan boundary adjoining the forests of Jalpaiguri District, the national park is one of the best places to encounter Himalayan animal and bird species. The national park features a rich topography which ranges from 1800, all the way to 3600m that allows witnessing rare and endangered animal species.
Located amidst the verdant hills of Namchi, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places to visit if you are a nature lover. Placed at an altitude of 10,600 ft, the wildlife sanctuary is home to numerous species of Himalayan birds and animals that are found in the thick forest of this region. Red Panda, Goral, Barking Deer, Leopard-Cat, and Civet-Cats are some of the common animal species. Magpies, Blue-Necked Pita, Sunbird Black Eagle Common Hill Partridge and Blood Pheasant are some of the birds that can be sighted in this sanctuary. The region is also popular for its numerous off-road trails and hiking trails attracting adventure seekers throughout the year.
